Dermal Filler 101: What It Actually Does (and Doesn't Do)

Between social media, celebrity gossip, and that one friend who swears she "doesn't look like she's had anything done," dermal filler comes with a lot of opinions attached. Some of them are helpful. Plenty of them are just plain wrong.

If you've been curious but a little nervous, you're in good company. Let's clear up what filler really is, what it can do, and what it can't.

So what is dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. Many are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces naturally, which helps skin stay hydrated and plump.

As we age, we lose volume in the face: cheeks flatten, lines deepen, lips thin, and shadows appear under the eyes. Filler replaces some of what time has taken, in a targeted way.

Between social media and that one friend who swears she "doesn't look like she's had anything done," dermal filler comes with a lot of opinions. Plenty of them are wrong. Filler isn't Botox, it doesn't have to look "done," and it isn't just for lips. It's a way to restore volume, soften lines, and enhance your natural contours, so you look like a refreshed version of yourself. Here's what filler actually does, what it can't do, and how to know if it's right for you.

Myth-busting: what filler is and isn't

Myth: Filler and Botox are the same thing. They're not, and they solve different problems. Botox and Dysport relax the muscles that cause expression lines. Filler adds volume and softens lines caused by volume loss. Many patients use both, because they work in complementary ways.

Myth: Filler will make me look "done." Overdone results come from too much product or poor technique, not from filler itself. A thoughtful, conservative approach is designed to make you look like a refreshed version of yourself, not a different person.

Myth: Filler is only for lips. Lips get the attention, but filler is commonly used for cheeks, smile lines, under-eye hollows, jawline, and chin. Often, the best results come from the areas people don't expect.

Myth: It's permanent. Most fillers are temporary and gradually absorb over time, with how long they last depending on the product and the area treated. That also means you have flexibility as your goals change.

Myth: It'll be obvious to everyone. When it's done well, people tend to say you look rested, not that you "got filler."

What filler can't do

Being honest matters here too. Filler can't tighten significant skin laxity, replace a facelift, or erase every line. It also isn't the right tool for every concern, which is why a good consultation should include a straight answer about what's realistic for you.

Why your provider matters

Filler is as much about artistry and facial anatomy as it is about product. A good provider looks at your whole face, not just the one area you pointed to, and builds a plan around balance and proportion.

Curious what filler could (and couldn't) do for you? Schedule a consultation and let's talk through your goals.
